The Poison Squad

By the close of the Industrial Revolution, the American food supply was tainted with frauds, fakes, and legions of new, untested chemicals, threatening the health of consumers across the United States.

The Poison Squad tells the story of government chemist Dr. Harvey Wiley’s crusade for pure food at the turn of the 20th Century.

Determined to banish these dangerous substances from American dinner tables, Wiley, a chief chemist at the USDA, took on the powerful food manufacturers and their allies in government, embarking upon a series of bold and controversial trials on twelve human subjects—who would become known as the “Poison Squad.”

Following Wiley’s experiments and tireless advocacy, this film charts the path of the man who laid the groundwork for the United States’ consumer protection laws, and ultimately the creation of the FDA.
