He’s confronted geopolitical conflict in feature films like YEAR ONE (HBO), a critical look at the first year of the Biden Presidency from within the White House, and the Emmy-nominated THE PERFECT WEAPON (HBO), a riveting investigation of America’s worldwide clandestine cyber war.
He’s directed intimate biographies of prolific Americans in THE NEWSPAPERMAN(HBO), the essential film biography of legendary Washington Post editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee, and the three-time Emmy-nominated film A CHOICE OF WEAPONS (HBO), about genre-bending photographer and filmmaker Gordon Parks (Tribeca 2021).
In his Emmy-winning feature PANIC (HBO), he cross-examined the architects of the largest Wall Street bailout in American history and in MR. SATURDAY NIGHT (HBO), he uncovered the innovations of legendary music and film impresario Robert Stigwood (DocNYC 2021).
In 2023, Maggio’s feature film MILANO, the epic story of how Armani, Versace, and the Italian fashion families transformed the entire industry, premiered at Milan Fashion Week and opened in theaters across Europe.
In 2024, Maggio, along with Issa Rae, executive-produced the Independent Spirit Award-nominated two-part HBO series SEEN AND HEARD (SXSW 2024), a living history of Black television—told by the people who made it. His latest film, PAUL ANKA: HIS WAY, about the 84-year-old teen heartthrob, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2024 and aired on HBO in December 2025.
Maggio is currently at work on THE ACT OF DREAMING, an intimate, verite´ film about the lives of newly arrived immigrants facing an uncertain future in America.
Maggio’s films have screened at festivals around the world, honored with Emmy Awards, Writers Guild Awards, and nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, an NAACP Image Award, GLAAD Award, Producers Guild of America Award, and multiple News and Doc Emmy Awards.
